I don't know about anyone else, but it seems to me that since the 1980s STAR TREKs have got more and more concerned with time-travel in addition to space travel (culminating in the temporal cold war of ENTERPRISE), which only reflects the increased incidence of time-travel stories in the rest of screen folklore (e.g., the TERMINATOR movies and even a Michael Crichton novel/movie). Time-travel story conventions became mainstream in the 90s the way space travel story conventions became mainstream in the 60s and 70s. And between DEEP SPACE NINE's science officer who changes bodies and VOYAGER's eccentric known only as Doctor, I suspect that STAR TREK's influence on this trend can actually be traced back to DOCTOR WHO. |
